Middleburg
Middleburg is a former rice plantation constructed in the 17th century located on the East Branch of the Cooper River. The estate features the oldest home in the southeastern United States and is comprised of 326 acres of protected wetlands and hardwood forests. The property is surrounded by the Francis Marion National Forest and the Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area in the heart of the Santee River Basin. Middleburg offers access to Bulls Bay, Cape Romain National Wildlife Area, Santee Coastal Reserve, and countless other recreational access points in the low country of South Carolina. Middleburg serves as an exceptional base camp for fishing, biking, and paddling among many other outdoor pursuits available in the region.
Middleburg is located 30 minutes north of Charleston in Huger, SC, and includes four historic accommodations consisting of the original residence completed in 1697, the Kitchen House, Commissary, and Guest House. The property features expansive outdoor amenities including live oak groves, trails, ponds, hardwood and pine forests, and direct access to the East Branch of the Cooper River.
The Santee River Basin offers world-class hiking, paddling, cycling, kayaking, birding, and fishing opportunities across more than half a million acres of public land in coastal South Carolina. Guide services are available to take you fishing, biking, or paddling in some of these truly remarkable natural assets.
The estate also offers direct access to some of the most remarkable historical features in the entire United States. Middleburg is one of the very few places that witnessed and survived both the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War. The main house bears marks from the occupations of officers and soldiers from both wars. The property endures as a National Historic Landmark and is the crown jewel of the Cooper River Historic District.

The property has persisted through numerous historical events during the development and evolution of the United States of America. Francis Marion National Forest
Francis Marion National Forest is comprised of more than 250,000 acres of land defined by swamps, low country marshes, vast pine forests and numerous bodies of water that comprise much of the Santee River Basin. The forest contains recreational opportunities for campers, fishers, hikers, runners, hunters, equestrians, and cyclists through various trail networks, primitive camping locations, numerous water access points, and seasonal hunting grounds.
The Palmetto Trail
The Palmetto Trail is a planned hiking and mountain biking route spanning the state of South Carolina. Beginning at the northern terminus in the Blue Ridge Mountain the trail meanders through the Uplands, Piedmont, and Sandhill regions of the state before ending at the South Carolina coast.
Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area
Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management Area (BFWMA) consists of over 11,000 acres of land renowned for its fishing and hunting outside of Huger, SC. Operated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, BFWMA is home to abundant wildlife that attract hunters and anglers throughout the year. Other recreational users regularly access the area for hiking, equestrian, and cycling pursuits.

Whitewater currently offers the Middleburg facility as an accommodation option. Middleburg is comprised of four different residential structures on 326 acres adjacent to Francis Marion National Forest and Bonneau Ferry Wildlife Management area.
Can I book accommodations in-person at Middleburg?
Whitewater does not currently offer any walk up bookings at Middleburg. All guests must inquire about desired dates to stay at the facility by utilizing the online Accommodations Inquiry Form or calling (704) 391-3900.
Is Middleburg open to the public?
